SURFING (optional)

Saturday Afternoon Optional Surf days will be spent either solo or with Surf Sister Surf School

Group lessons offer three hours of quality surf instruction with no more than five students to one instructor.

The lesson starts on the beach where you learn all about

Equipment usage and care
Ocean safety
Surf etiquette
Proper surfing technique

Then after a quick stretch we head out to waist deep water where you’ll enjoy catching tons of whitewater waves and learn from the tips our experienced instructors have to share.
*Prerequisites – students must have basic swimming skills and be 12 years or older (over 5 ft and 100 lbs).

OUR TEACHERS

Nicky Jones B.Ed, YTT, Therapeutic Thai Massage, Reiki

Nicky originally discovered yoga 12 years ago as a cure for ‘dis-ease’ . During difficult times, yoga became a necessary therapy to bring balance back into her life. Today, yoga is a lifestyle for Nicky. Yoga combines two of her lifelong passions of teaching and holistic wellness. She believes that teaching yoga is one of her true callings as she loves helping others to reach and maintaintheir own optimum wellness. Nicky’s teaching style reflects her many years of training as a dancer and figure skater. She loves to focus on the breath to guide the movement and to keep one’s attention in the present moment. Her classes find the connection between stretching, strengthening, balancing, relaxation, and just being. Because of this, the benefits reach far further than the mat, and into one’s daily life.

Natalie Tamosiunas RYT

Natalie’s first structured yoga class was sometime in 2003 at the local Iyengar studio. She sampled a variety of styles intermittently in the years following. Natalie was drawn to a more regular Hatha style practice in 2010 to strengthen after a kayaking injury. This time, stepping on the mat was a homecoming; it was pure love, and daily practice flowed into teacher training, which she completed in 2011. Natalie loves the sweet smell of the West Coast forest in summer, the texture of beach sand on her bare feet and the unity and balance that yoga brings to her life. She believes that shoes are over-rated and that yoga has the power to bring our awareness back into our bodies and back into the present moment.

FOOD

Our food is lovingly and expertly prepared by Jennifer Graham, who is actually the clothing designer at Salts Organic Clothing. Jennifer is passionate about fresh organic and healing foods. A mixed menu of raw and cooked items will be available to heal and revive your body.

ACCOMMODATIONS

We are staying at the Tofino Botanical Gardens Eco Lodge, in Tofino, BC. Located on 12 acres of waterfront gardens and rainforest at the gateway to the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Connect with Nature in the gardens, forest, and shoreline that explore the relationship between culture and nature.

If you would like to extend your stay beyond the retreat the rate per night is $99.00

LOCATION

Tofino and Ucluelet are two gems secluded on the West Coast of Vancouver Island in the province of British Columbia, Canada. At Tofino’s doorstep is the Clayoquot Sound region, a world UNESCO biosphere reserve. This area boasts one of British Columbia’s most prized nature reserves, Pacific Rim National Park. Tofino offers the best way to experience BC’s pristine wilderness first hand. Tofino is home to Canada’s Best Place to Surf.

Getting Here

Our Retreat starts with Dinner at the Eco Lodge 530pm September 21. Arrivals should be planned anytime in the afternoon. Our time together will end with Brunch at 11am September 23.

We recommend contacting Tracey Mcewan, 1 866 210 6135, with Flight Center, to arrange your flight and travel if your coming from afar. Tracey is local to the island and is available to answer all your travel questions. We also recommend having a vehicle if you are wanting to explore the island more….there is much to take in here!

Sun Salutation Flow Basic Yoga Pose Series

A simple flow yoga Sun Salutation series by Yoga Instructor Nicky from Barefoot at Heart Yoga in Victoria, BC. She combines basic poses of the Sun Salutation with more advanced positions to make the series slightly harder. The Sun Salutation, also known as Salute to the Sun and Surya Namaskar, is a flowing series of 12 poses which help improve strength and flexibility of the muscles and spinal column. To adapt this series to a more basic pose or Beginners Sun Salutation remove the leg lift from the downward dog and the upward reach on the lunge pose. Also you may simplify by removing the last squat pose of the series if you need to make the series less intense.

It is recommended that you go throught the Sun Salutation series 4 times in the morning. Some yogis like to turn east direction as they practice. Starting facing the rising sun and then turning 90 degrees with each time repeating the series.

Stretching and smiling in Organic Yoga Clothes! Barefoot at Heart Yoga has just moved right to the heart of downtown Victoria, BC to the most beautiful studio space. You will be inspired stretching it out in their lovely space. I met up with one of their Certified Yoga Instructors Nicky to review some basic poses. These poses go great with a Sun Salutation practice.

He originates from Southern France, a small town called Bordeaux. His menu for this retreat will include traditional French Culinary masterpieces combined with his passion for wild living raw foods. Where are we going…. where have we been….

I started Salts in 2005 in my studio near French Beach on Vancouver Island BC. It all started with one hooded sweatshirt pattern that I had developed with the thought of trying to create a flattering and pretty hoodie while still making it useful for us girls that like to do some yoga on the beach or check the surf. I sewed all the hoodies in my small space, spending my days cutting and sewing away. Little did I know all the different roads this little journey would take me.

I chose the name Salts because “salts” have long been used in ancient cultures as a preservative for perishables. We chose the name in the hopes that we could be part of the solution for preserving this planet we call home. Everyday we make it our mission to change this world for the better, preserve the beauty around us and create beauty for your to wear.

I had dreams of creating great Eco friendly clothing with hemp, organic cotton, soy, merino wool and other natural fibers. I love what we create and I hope that you and yours will enjoy the fruits of our labor.

I plan to keep adding to this section of our blog the musing of my fashion design journey. Please stay tuned!

Whats inspiring us at Salts for Spring?

Spring is always a time of fresh starts at Salts. New beginnings as we prepare for our busy summer season. This year I am really inspired by soft pallettes and lose fit. Soft and flowy is the order of the day. I just unloaded a batch of our bright fun seamless bamboo organic cotton tights into the store so I thought I would show you how I would style our lovely little bamboo leggings.

Spring is a time to be more daring with your colors and mix in new things that you didn’t try in the last year. Be daring! Add some color. Mix and match the old with the new. You will find that a fresh item of clothing can revive a tired winter wardrobe. It might not be warm enough to put on the short skirts yet but your sure can add some bright leggings to your look.
